{life lessons}

So many great & true things in this list!  I may need to do something similar for my 50th.  I better start writing now...

Top 37 Life Lessons So Far...
  1. Happiness comes from within. We spend way too much of our lives looking for outside validation and approval that eludes us. Turns out, it's been an inside job all along. Go inward.

  2. Be grateful for everything. The good, the bad, the ugly. Our entire life is a precious gift. The pleasure, the pain -- it's all part of our path.


  3. Subtle shifts in perception will transform your entire life. When feeling fearful, angry, hurt, simply choose to see a situation differently.


  4. In being true to yourself, you can't possibly make everybody else happy. Still, it's better to risk being disliked for living your truth than to be loved for what you are pretending to be.


  5. The world is our mirror. What we love in others is a reflection of what we love about ourselves. What upsets us about others is a strong indication of what we need to look at more closely within ourselves.


  6. Everybody comes into our life for a reason. It is up to us to be open to the lesson they are meant to teach. The more someone rubs us the wrong way, the greater the lesson. Take notes.


  7. Trust. In troubled times, just know that the Universe has your back and everything is going to be alright. If you're not there yet, trust in hindsight you will understand. Your higher good is being supported, always.


  8. Never take things personally. What others do is a reflection of what's going on in their own life and probably has little or nothing to do with you.


  9. A walk in nature cures a lot. Taking in some fresh air and the beautiful landscape of this earth is amazingly head-clearing, grounding, and mood-lifting. Bonus: You can learn a whole lot about life in your observation of the awesomeness which is nature.


  10. Hurt people hurt people. Love them anyway. Although, it's totally okay to love them from a distance.


  11. You have to feel it to heal it. Bring your fears and weaknesses front and center and shine a blazing spotlight on them because the only way out is through. The hurt of facing the truth is SO worth it in the long run, I swear.


  12. Perfectionism is an illusion. A painful one at that. Ease up. Strive for excellence, sure, but allow yourself room to make mistakes and permission to be happy regardless of outcome.


  13. Take the blinders off. Don't become so laser-focused on your own goals and desires that you miss out on the beauty in life and the people around you. The world is stunningly beautiful when you walk around with eyes wide open.


  14. Celebrate the journey. It's not all about the destination. Savor all of your successes, even the small ones.


  15. Forgiveness is not so much about the other person. It's about you and for you so that you can gain the peace and freedom you deserve. Forgive quickly and often.


  16. We are all incredibly intuitive. When we learn to become still and listen, we can tap into some pretty amazing primal wisdom. Listen to the quiet whisper of your heart. It knows the way.


  17. Let your soul shine! Be authentic. There is nobody else on this earth just like you. Step into your truth wholeheartedly and live and breathe your purpose.


  18. We are powerful creators. Seriously, bad-asses. With intention, focus, and persistence -- anything is possible. Know this.


  19. I am full of light. You are full of light. We are all full of light. Some cast shadows on their own brightness. Be a beacon of light to others and show them the way.


  20. Don't take life too seriously! Nobody gets out alive anyway. Smile. Be goofy. Take chances. Have fun.

  26. Sometimes we outgrow friendships. It doesn't mean they're bad or you're bad. It just means you're on different paths. Hold them in your heart, but when they start to hurt or hold you back, it's time to give space or let go.


  27. Fear is often a very good indicator of what we really want and need in our life. Let it be your compass and enjoy the exciting adventure it leads you on.


  28. Overcoming your fears is one of the most empowering things you can ever do for yourself. You'll prove to yourself you can truly accomplish anything! Major self-confidence booster.


  29. Our bodies are our vehicle to our dreams. Treat them with love and fuel them with the best health to feel vibrant and energized. But, never obsess over image. Looks are subjective and will fade in time, anyway. Feeling good, healthy, and comfortable in our own skin is what matters most.


  30. Let those that you love know it often and enthusiastically. You can never say it or show it too much. Your time, total presence, love, and genuine concern for their wellness is the greatest gift of all.

Think for yourself. Break the mold. When you stop doing what everybody else wants you to do and start following your own intuition, you will be ridiculously happy.

trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world.  
You're doing things you've never done before & more importantly...you're doing something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. 
Make New Mistakes.  Make glorious, amazing mistakes.  
Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. 
Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect,

It’s that time of year, when the urge to be rid of the past, and to forge forward into a glorious future, feels almost irresistible.

I’ve been hearing some variation of this from my clients, over the past few weeks: I’m so done with that pattern/that relationship/the Me That Was. It hurts, it feels awful — I never want to experience it again.

And yet, inside every pattern, no matter how painful, frustrating, or debilitating it might be, is an aspect of you that holds your soul's essence.

This inner self may be stuck in a story that she clings to, even as it fills her with pain. She may be unable to see beyond her drama, her dreams or nightmares, her version of how things should be, and aren’t.

He may be trapped in old stories of shame and blame. She did this to me. I always. He never. That's just the way it is.

The seeds of pain burrow deep into the flesh of our stories, and sprout thorny thickets of suffering. The world around us becomes a desert in which only cacti can survive.

So we become cacti. All hard rind and prickly edges.

And the future that a cactus creates looks an awful lot like the desert. Just enough moisture, just enough shade, just enough nourishment to survive. Despite a hostile environment. Despite thin air and searing sun. Bleak survival.

What would your world look like, if you peeled away those stories? If the truth at the sweet heart of your inner selves is revealed?

The You that feels powerless holds in her heart the inner truth of Power. The You that is filled with shame holds the jewel of Sovereignty. The You that is humiliated knows the fertile essence of Humility.

The inner self who is so attached to her stories also holds, in her heart, the essence of your soul. In the jagged gape of your wounds she carries your treasure – that which greens your life and your world.

Your job is to remind her of the truth of her inner being. 
And to restore her to her rightful place in the ecology of your life, 
so you can create a future that emerges from your wholeness, 
from your true and sacred desire.

You can’t do this by getting rid of her. You can only do this through love and discernment, appreciation and more love.

Sweetheart, you say, show me what you know, deep inside you. Show me your true self.

And she will show you. As soon as you ask the question, the enchantment of the story she’s been living lifts, and she remembers her true name.

Earth Angel. Radiant Moon Path. Truth Lightning. Thirsty Root of Deep Desire. Mistress of Tides.

I so resonate with this...especially love "find the others"!

::Seriously, do you want that burger? Then just fucking eat a burger. Don’t be gross about it, and don’t eat a burger three meals a day. But I beg you, women and image-conscious male humans of the world, stop beating yourself up about it and just eat the fucking burger.

:: Do whatever the fuck you want. :: Have good friends. Call them. Complain a little. That’s what friends are for. Return the favor. Don’t be a shitty friend.

:: Learn how to laugh about farts. Fart more. Laugh about it.

:: Be incessantly curious about the world around you! Experience art, science, beauty, and nature! But stop beating yourself up on those nights when you just want to sit your ass on the couch and watch reruns of Friends.

:: Smile when you feel like smiling. Laugh whenever you fucking feel like laughing. Pro tip: Being told to ‘laugh more’ is not going to make you laugh more. Being told to ‘smile more’ is not going to make you smile more.

:: Make time for yourself. After you’ve run that 5K, started a load of laundry, harvested your organic vegetable garden, run to the bank, paid the bills, dazzled everyone with recipes that are cost-effective, healthy, and delicious, thought of something witty and clever to share with your social networking site, caught up on current events and politics, and cleaned all of the house, that special hour set aside just for you is so critical to your well-being.

:: Do whatever the fuck you want.

:: Don’t care what other people think. Unless they’re right. In which case, fucking humble yourself enough to listen to them.

:: Do. Whatever. The Fuck. You Want. Do what you want. Be your damn self. Don’t be a terrible person. Be nice to others. Be supportive of your friends and allow yourself to give them the benefit of the doubt when they want to try something new, like rescuing shelter dogs, or making performance art in the nude, or dating terrible people. They’re your friends and you love them, and if they suck, stop being their friend. Show up for work. Pay your bills. Find some fucking purpose in your life, and figure out a way to share that purpose with others in a way that isn’t sanctimonious and doesn’t involve a picture of a woman laughing at an empty beach. Smile because something makes you smile. Laugh because you’ve surrounded yourself by people who make you laugh, and they’re funny fucking people, and you’re happy to be with them. Dance because you’re drunk at a big dance party with your friends and Michael Jackson is playing, not because ‘no one is watching.’ Everyone is watching. We’re at a fucking party. That’s how parties work.

{saying goodbye}

{saying goodbye}
I lost a dear friend last week.  She was riding her motorcycle with her boyfriend and another couple in the middle of the day -- as she so loved to do!  A car crossed the median as the driver was paying more attention to his phone than the road.  Her boyfriend held her as she took her last breath.  A mother was lost to a senseless tragedy!  She was a truly remarkable person and I was blessed to have called her my friend.  

I didn't see or talk to Angi often enough -- we all know how life is -- and any one who's my friend knows I'm terrible at it. But true friends who you connect with - the ones who touch your soul - can always pick up where they left off like no time has passed. One of the things I loved about Angi, I believe, was her gift to all who met her...her keen awareness to see people for who they are inside & make them feel special, which is why we found her so special in return. I don't know how to say goodbye to such a beautiful person who touched so many lives...so I won't. Your smile & positive energy will live on. 

Instead of asking WHY...I'm trying to look at how Angi lived a "do what you love" life as inspiration & ask instead how I can bring more of that into my life!

At the service, pink ribbons were passed out to tie on since pink was her favorite color. The microphone was passed around to all of the 400+ people in attendance to say one word about her. ..all beautiful! At the end of the service, the doors in the room were opened to the outdoors. As what could be described as a biker's "21 gun salute" -- all the bikes started & engines roaring. The sound of the bikes filled the room... then silence. That my friends was AMAZING & tugged at my heart (aka...couldn't stop crying). 

Later that day, there were double rainbows twice that evening!  I like to think of them as her letting us know she is still watching over us.  Until we meet again my dear friend. xoxo

{Dark Side} will you love me?

I was in my weight lifting class last night and this song by Kelly Clarkson was playing.  I was listening to the lyrics and was thinking of what I may hide from others.  How many of us are afraid to show our "dark side" -- those things we define as "bad" or "wrong" -- so we are loved?  Or so we don't loose the love we have?  

No one is perfect, so why are we so afraid to show we are not either.  Maybe if we were willing to show more of our flaws it would allow the other person to open up and share theirs as well.  Everyone has their past...their story -- as long as we've learned from it we should not be ashamed of it.  Life happens!  We should not let the define us.  It is the past...and it has made us who we are today.  We must remind ourselves...we are pretty awesome!  

As the quote below points out -- beautiful people do not just happen...

The Courage to Fly

I am honored to say that I am participating in the Courage to Fly Blog Hop that is hosted by Stephey Baker of Marked by the Muse.  Stephey challenged us to share what we love and to remind ourselves "to build your life with your heart, to push off the branch each day and let your heart fly!". 

My question...

Have you ever taken a risk on yourself? Pushed off the branch and flew into uncharted territory with nothing but inspiration fueling you? If so, please share what gave you the COURAGE to take a risk on yourself. 

First, I'd like to share with you a definition of courage that I love, love, love.  It's from Brene Brown's book called "Gifts of Imperfection".
The root of the word courage is cor -- the Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage had a very different definition than it does today. Courage originally meant to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart.
One risk I have taken on myself was starting this blog, which is my courage - it's me...telling all in my heart.  I'm sure you are all familiar with that whisper and nudging that just doesn't let your creative self ever get pushed too far to the side.  I felt like I wasn't making creativity a priority in my life.  Afterall, it is who I am and something I love that makes me feel whole.

You see, I am one of those people who has an idea, but then feels like everything needs to be "perfect" in order to put it out there, but THIS TIME, I just began!  I loved the idea of calling my blog "Beautifully Imperfect" since over the last year I had begun realizing that I am perfect just as I am.  It's like I suddenly realized all I needed to was to be true to me - to share with the world who I am and what I love - in turn, the universe responds and opens a new view of the world around you.  
The jump is so frightening between where I am and where I want to be.  Because of all I may become, I will close my eyes & leap. ~ Mary Ann Rademacher
Since creating my blog, I have found many like minded souls with the artists that I have found online.  I always felt like I lacked that connection to others who really understood my journey and my desire to be true to myself.  My desire to nurture those whispers and nudgings.  I have been inspired by all the courageous people...all speaking their hearts by sharing their gifts - their art, their voice, their writing.  Now, I understand how sharing yourself with the world, even if it touches just one person, makes all the difference.  
Because our gifts carry us out into the world and make us participants in life, the uncovering of them is one of the most important tasks confronting any one of us.  When we talk about being true to ourselves--being the persons we are intended to be--we are talking about gifts.  We cannot be ourselves unless we are true to our gifts.  ~ Elizabeth O'Connor
In February 14th (the day of love), I commited to post something I love everyday - to Live Love 365 (my post on Feb 14)!  I wanted to look for the beauty in each day and this has came mostly in the form of posting pictures.  It has been amazing to me how my view of things I would tend to overlook has changed.  I am so much more aware and take the time to notice the little things.  Here are a couple of the sets of pictures I've taken - Winter Beauty & A Day in a Sunset.

Then today, my heart almost melted when I commented on how pretty a photograph was that a friend had posted on Facebook.  Her response to me was "you inspired me by all your beautiful pics" - I inspired her - WOW!  

I don't know where this journey will lead, but what I do know is I finally feel like I'm on the right path and I'm living each day with my heart.  I am eager to learn more and develop my gifts.  I welcome all the inspirations, explorations, opportunities and discoveries I have yet to encounter.  I am ready to FLY!  The lesson...just begin!!

Are you an Artist?

I just LOVE this article by Stephey Baker asking...would you call yourself an artist?

This list of "nothing wrong with..." in her article just spoke to me:
As an Artist, there is nothing wrong with being inspired. There is nothing wrong in believing in the impossible dream. There is nothing wrong with trusting your gut, more than your ears, over what others tell you or you even tell yourself. There is nothing wrong with having an abundance of ideas, it's doesn't make poor or unfocused. There is nothing wrong with possessing intuitive intelligence. There's nothing wrong refusing to choose one thing to do in your life. There's nothing wrong with having multiple interests. There is nothing wrong in living your day-to-day outside the coveted 9-5 hours. There is nothing wrong with being the only one "who gets it." There is nothing wrong in seeing beauty in ordinary things. There is nothing wrong about celebrating the triumph of a new creation, doing the very thing you once thought you couldn't. There's nothing wrong with being sensitive. There's nothing wrong with being hopeful and having that be your "reality." There's nothing wrong with expressing dreams that want to come true. There's nothing wrong in striving to create the life you desire no matter how long it takes. There's nothing wrong in thinking different. There's nothing wrong in being unlike anyone else. There's nothing wrong in being truly unique (after all we all are and our finger print proves it). There's nothing wrong in wanting to be free. There's nothing wrong with being you. There's nothing wrong in doing what you love. What you love is what you're meant to do; the very reason you were born is to bring forward your gift. Your gift is what you love.
